Mobile Dog Gear®
A veterinarian-approved travel system makes it easier to take Fido on the road.
"If I can't bring my dog, I'm not going!"
Anyone who knows someone with a dog has heard this said before, or maybe they’ve uttered it themselves. More than ever, people are taking their dogs with them on day trips and longer vacations, with pet travel obstacles serving as dealbreakers. That’s when the executives at 20-year-old Overland Travelware had an idea. Why not shift from people travel bags into doggie travel gear? Alan Friedgood (President) and his son Adam (VP Sales), who launched Mobile Dog Gear two years ago, take us through the products.
Kind of like a baby diaper bag for parents?
Exactly! You’d be surprised what people were using to carry pet accessories and food before. We did a lot of research and found that people were using grocery store or garbage bags, even pulling out a never-used travel bag from the bottom of their closet.
How does your travel system work and what makes it special?
We created a line of bags but also incorporated a travel feeding system. The patent-pending system includes two silicone bowls (that pop open for eating and lay flat for storage), two insulated food/treat carriers, plus a non-stick placemat. Everything matches so it looks neat and pulled together.
What are the most popular items?
The Week Away® and the Day Away® bags, which are just what they sound. We titled them as such because they are food carriers to hold enough food needed for a week or day away, based on a veterinarian’s recommendations. Some of our products have two sizes—one for small dogs (under 25 pounds) and one for medium/large dogs (over 25 pounds). While we don’t include the food, as that would have a shelf life, the system tells you how much food you need. For example, for a week away with a large dog, you’d need about 30 cups of dry food, so this system includes two 15-cup food carriers to hold just that. It’s one less thing to think about. We also have a Walking Bag for day or nighttime excursions, Dine Away® food sets for going out to dinner, Weekender backpacks, and more. Prices range from $29.99 to $99.99.
What else are you working on? We have a few things in development, namely an automotive product line for pets. One is a backseat organizer to keep all the accessories neat and easy to access in the car. Another is a trunk organizer, which is a 20-inch open basket with lots of organizational pockets to hold things you don’t want to take with you. That will be rolled out January/February 2021.
Who is your target customer?
We’re obviously targeting dog owners, but we’ve discovered a huge gift market here. Everyone loves dogs, and lots of parents are buying our unique travel bags for their children who have dogs. There’s a tremendous need in the market for this.
