_CARE / CARE COACH Q+A

Due to Covid-19, I haven’t been able to hug my mom
as she is in a care facility. What are some things I can
do to help us feel connected?

Hugs are something we not only miss but need to stay connected and grounded. That personal human touch, whether we are aware, soothes the soul, calms anxiety, reduces stress and helps us feel connected on deeper levels. In some cases, it takes us back to our childhood and feelings of safety and security. Human touch is a form of language, love language. Communicating that virtually doesn’t fill the void but often spotlights what we are missing. I wish there was an answer or a date when we all knew “normal” would return, but while we are living in this new time, protection of our loved ones is still top priority.

While this won’t replace human touch, there are other ways we can connect on deeper levels. One is through storytelling. Stop, slow down, share and listen to stories from your loved ones. As we have all had time to reflect during this “quiet” period, this is a great time to listen to love. Love of moments you shared, love of a feeling that connects you on an intimate level. Listen to the love of one another by sharing stories, moments and true feelings.

Sometimes love is quiet. It has an intangible power with built in comfort. Don’t be afraid to just be together virtually or distantly in silence. The unspoken word of how someone makes you feel can be just as powerful.

Lastly, communicate with them when the time is right, and when it’s safe for all involved – you are going to hug so long that it will feel like you will never let go.
