Cheers to a Healthy New Year
Usher it in with fun, tasty mocktails and alcohol-free bubbly.
Too often once the new year begins, we forget our New Year’s resolutions to become healthier. And one of those resolutions might include trying to drink less alcohol. But it doesn’t have to be that way thanks to a growing number of brands providing more alcohol-free options. Many of these brands are long on sophistication and taste while short on alcohol, with some less than 0.5% alcohol by volume.
Give ‘Dry January’ a Try
Alcohol consumption has been found to cause serious health issues for some people. Researchers in Finland learned that “Moderate alcohol use is associated with decreased brain volume in early middle age in both sexes.” And according to Harvard Health, “For women, even moderate drinking can increase the risk of breast cancer. If you’re a woman at average risk, a drink per day can increase your lifetime risk of breast cancer from 8.25% to 8.8%.”
But foregoing alcohol doesn’t have to mean saying, “Cranberry juice, hold the vodka,” forever. In recent years, an increasing number of brands have recognized that not all consumers want to drink alcohol. There is a spectrum. Some people may only want to drink alcohol on occasion and others may not want to drink alcohol at all. Many people can’t have alcohol due to health and medical reasons, or medication issues. With this information, companies began rolling out more alcohol-free options.
So, You're Alcohol-Free
But how would you like a nice, dry martini? What about one crafted with Lyre's Dry London Spirit, which you can think of as gin, paired with the aromatic Apéritif Dry? In true Miss Moneypenny and Mr. Bond fashion, decide whether a martini should be shaken or stirred. Craving the warmth of a classic Manhattan? There’s Lyre’s American Malt and Apéritif Rosso sold as a set. Or try a crisp L&T in place of a G&T, also sold as a set.
Lyre's is named after the Australian bird known for its uncanny ability to mimic a wide range of sounds. In a similar fashion, Lyre’s Spirit Co carefully and scientifically mimics the characteristics of beloved spirits and crafts award-winning nonalcoholic spirits. As CEO and Co-Founder Mark Livings says, “We offer a guilt-free alternative to the intensity, balance, and beauty of time-tested classics.”
Imagine the Many Drink Possibilities
How about an armful of gorgeously hued bottles and celebration-ready mocktails? Mingle Mocktails was inspired by founder Laura Taylor’s journey to be alcohol-free and still wanting to feel socially connected with friends. “Mingle Mocktails is all about social connection and inclusion… 30% of Americans do not drink and many more take breaks for reasons ranging from being pregnant, on medication or addiction recovery to dietary restriction or simply choosing to be alcohol-free. I choose to live alcohol-free, but my husband and many friends are social drinkers who can enjoy Mingle alone as a mocktail (like me) or mix with spirits for a light cocktail. Either way, Mingle enables everyone to enjoy the fun with one drink, ensuring that all feel part of the occasion!”
With your mocktail in hand, you’re a part of any party in 2021. Try starting the year off with flavors like Cranberry Cosmo, an effervescent mix of piquant cranberry and crisp lime, or a Moscow Mule with its zesty blend of sparkling ginger and lime. For more refreshing and citrus-inspired flavors try a Cucumber Melon Mojito or Blood Orange Elderflower Spritzer.
For some straight-up, alcohol-free cheer, Ritual Zero Proof offers non-alcoholic and calorie-free gin, whiskey, and tequila. The Ritual Tequila Alternative received the Beverage Testing Institute’s score of 94 points, making it the highest-ranking non-alcoholic spirit in the world. There’s also their rich and warm Ritual Whiskey Alternative, with caramel notes and fragrant American oak. Think of it as a new version of an Old-Fashioned. Just because it’s perfect for cocktails doesn’t mean it won’t melt your heart when you have it neat, with orange, or with bitters.
But Wait, There’s More
Yet another tasteful alcohol alternative that knows what you like is SeedLip, founded by Ben Branson in 2015. The founding of Seedlip was based on his 350-year farming heritage and a combined love of nature, flavor, and design. You might be wondering what Seedlip means. A seedlip is the name of the basket that farmers sling around their necks to hold seeds to sow. Branson’s family used seedlips while working on their farm and, as they say, the rest is history.
As you make your way through their selection, start with the SeedLip Starter Kit that includes one bottle of Spice 94, one bottle of Grove 42, and two bottles of Fever-Tree Refreshingly Light Ginger Ale.
